The church complex of San Giorgio

The church complex of San Giorgio, around which the historic center of Montagna in Valtellina is clustered, comprises religious buildings from different eras:

  • the parish church of S. Giorgio, the oratory of the Madonna del Carmine,
  • the oratory of the Annunciazione,
  • the church of the Beata Vergine Addolorata,
  • the archpriest’s house,
  • the ossuary.

The 15th century Church of San Giorgio has a gabled façade and 15th-16th century frescoes on the walls flanking the portal, in the lunette above and on the walls of the nave.
In the back there is the oratory of the Madonna del Carmine (15th century), with a Greek cross plan and covered with cross vaults.

Of significant importance is the cycle of Renaissance frescoes by Sigismondo de Magistris (1515), in the presbytery. An inner courtyard leads to the seventeenth-century oratory of the Annunciazione, under which there is an ossuary that overlooked the cemetery. In its place, the church of Beata Vergine Addolorata or "Church of the Dead", with a baroque façade and a beautiful eighteenth-century painting inside, was built in the mid-eighteenth century.
