Valtellina wine Road

Valtellina wine Road

The Valtellina Strada del Vino e dei Sapori is a fascinating panoramic road that winds for 67 km through the terraced vineyards from which Nebbiolo delle Alpi is made. The route is well marked and easy to follow, running from Ardenno to Tirano through the Valtellina valley. Along the wine road, visitors can choose to stay overnight in the vineyards, immersed in the silence and peace of a country inn, rediscovering the traditional allure of dishes prepared “like grandma used to” and speaking with those who work the soil up in the mountains.

The Strada offering includes wineries that welcome visitors, providing tastings and guided tours, restaurants that propose traditional dishes and local Valtellina wines, country inns with accommodations, hotels with splendid views of the vineyards and old-time shops selling wines and local specialties. The Valtellinawineroad runs through amazing landscapes, crossing little hamlets, sanctuaries surrounded by luxuriant vegetation, ruins of ancient castles perched in strategic locations and prehistoric rock art, all made even more magical by the golden sunsets typical of the Alps.

Nebbiolo from the Alps

In Valtellina, grapevines have always been an important part of people’s lives: for centuries, the local inhabitants have festooned the Rhaetian slopes with dry walls, built stone by stone, to retain the topsoil for the terraced vineyards. The cultivated band, with southern exposure, extends for 60 km, between 300 and 800 m in altitude. This is the birthplace of the great wines made with Nebbiolo delle Alpi: the Valtellina DOC reds, the Valtellina Superiore DOCG (in five denominations: Maroggia, Sassella, Grumello, Inferno and Valgella) and Sforzato, a Valtellina DOCG.
