Grumello Castle
The medieval Castle of Piro al Grumello is perched atop a terraced rocky butte, in a strategic spot on the sunny slope, a few kilometers from Sondrio. It is a rare example of a twin castle, consisting of two distinct structures (one military, to the east, and the other residential, to the west) encircled by the walls.
Erected between the end of the thirteenth and the start of the fourteenth century by the Ghibelline Corrado de Piro, it was dismantled, like most of the areas fortifications, in the third decade of the fifteen hundreds by the Grisons.
It was restored after it was donated by the Societą Enologica Valtellinese to the FAI in 1990, and opened to the public in 2001.
Along the road leading to the castle, there are two things worthy of notice: the church of S. Antonio, built in 1668, and the nearby mulberry tree, more than a hundred years old.
